The first time I noticed it was while I was in Mongkok (fashion capital of Kowloon). I stared hard at the girl and even blinked a few times just to make sure I hadn’t made a mistake, but there it was – her spectacle frames had no glasses. First thought was “this is odd, why would she wear frames without glasses?” I hadn’t thought of spectacles as fashionable, having worn one since I was 10. One things for sure, i never did look very fashionable in spectacles and would be happy to be rid of it in a heartbeat.
I thought the girl was a one-off until this article in WSJ confirmed that it is indeed widespread…. Only in HK.

Glasses without lenses = incredible douchebaggery.
I started wearing glasses regularly since I came back to HK (alas, many years ago) – something to do with the fluorescent lights here – and I would love to rid myself of the bifocals I now wear. And then here we are, these idiots wear empty eyeglass frames… *sigh*
In the UK, this kind of antics is mostly seen in “chavs” (lower-class or underclass fashion-victim teen), and pubs there can refuse to serve someone who wear lensless glasses.
